Firefighter Air Replenishment Systems Virtual Demo

Firefighters have limited air to do the job. Learn about new technologies that can extend that air and prevent toxic exposures.

Cancer, disease, and illness among firefighters are driving air management technology into the spotlight. It is imperative that firefighters do everything right and exit the IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) environment within 30 minutes to avoid exposure to toxic fire smoke.

The Firefighter Air Coalition (FAC) partners with Lifeline Firehose, Arctic Compressors, and Johnson Controls to promote the Firefighter Air Replenishment System (FARS). FARS is an air standpipe system, similar to the water standpipe system, that allows firefighters to fill their air tanks while inside a building. Originally designed for high-rise buildings, these systems are now crucial for today’s industrial warehouses and mid-rise buildings (five floors and up). The increasing demands on fire and emergency services departments to cover extensive square footage present significant challenges.

Benefits of FARS

Implementing FARS provides several benefits:

  • Extended Operational Time: Firefighters can refill their air tanks inside the building, allowing for longer and more effective operations.
  • Enhanced Safety: Reduced exposure to toxic smoke.
  • Efficiency: Quick and easy refilling process without the need to exit the building.

Division Chief of Training, Brian Jones, Nashville Fire Department, explains the numerous benefits.

FAC advocates are available to assist any fire department interested in learning more about Firefighter Air Replenishment Systems. This technology is being adopted by departments throughout the United States for various reasons, but ultimately, it's about ensuring the safety of the community and the health and well-being of firefighters.
